Wild Ride is Bonorong’s new fundraising campaign where we encourage supporters to do a ‘Wild Ride’ to raise money for wildlife in our care. The funds raised will help run Bonorong’s rescue, critical care hospital, and rehabilitation animal care services.
Ride a bicycle, a scooter, a skateboard, or roller skate, hop on a pogo stick, even wear a costume while you’re doing your Wild Ride! You create your very own Wild Ride with a team or as an individual, with your work mates, friends, or family. Anyone can take part – groups, businesses, and organisations.
Want to become a Wild Rider? You can register as an individual, a team, a business or as an organisation. Simply register using the button below, then start planning for your Wild Ride and raising money. You can provide updates and share your progress with your followers as you go!
And if you can’t do your own Wild Ride, there are plenty of other ways to help support animals – you can sponsor a Wild Rider, donate directly or become a Corporate Partner.

Can you help us help Tasmanian wildlife this end of financial year? 💚
The ongoing costs of operating our dedicated Wildlife Hospital, 24/7 Wildlife Rescue Service, and Critical Care and Rehabilitation services are expected to continue to grow as we face increasing demand for our wildlife services - the only services of their kind in Tasmania. 🩺
Your donation, however large or small, makes a real and substantial difference to the lives of the thousands of wildlife patients that come through our doors. 🐾
🩻$50 A week’s supply of medical oxygen for animals undergoing examinations and surgery under anaesthesia.
🩸$100 to enable our vet team to run a specialist blood test for animals suffering from illness and disease.
💊$500 one month’s supply of anti-inflammatory pain medication for multiple patients undergoing treatment at our wildlife hospital
🦅$1500 pays for one endangered Wedge-tailed eagle to undergo specialist surgery
😴$2500 buys an incubator or ‘humidicrib’ used to house small animals and orphans in intensive care
Friends of Bonorong acts as a fundraising arm to the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary and Bonorong Wildlife Hospital & Rescue. The aims are to fundraise for the immediate care of wildlife in crisis and for the ongoing protection of Tasmanian wildlife in need.🦘

This little face belongs to "Moose" the Ringtail Possum joey!🥰
The 24/7 Bonorong Wildlife Rescue Service received a call for help last month after a pet cat had grabbed this little possum and brought it inside the owner`s home. ☎️
Luckily, little Moose was still alive, but he had sustained at least one wound from the incident. Although cat bite wounds often appear quite small in size, they can cause tremendous suffering. Bacteria in a cat`s saliva can easily infect the wound, which can be very dangerous if left untreated, and often there are additional hidden internal crush injuries that are not immediately visible. ❤️🩹
For this reason, it was important for Moose to be seen by a vet. Upon arrival at the Bonorong Wildlife Hospital, our veterinary team were able to identify a number of lacerations that needed attention and he was prescribed some pain relief and precautionary antibiotics to tackle potential infection. 🩺
As Moose is such a young joey who will require ongoing medical care, it was important to place him in the care of an experienced registered wildlife rehabilitator who has all the skills required to give him the best second chance at life. We are wishing him and his carer all the best on the journey to get Moose back to the wild. 🐾🐾

Have a look behind the scenes of the new RECAP Wildlife Hospital and care facilities! 👀
As part of the new and improved facilities, we have a new dedicated "conscious check room" for our wildlife patients. When a rescued animal first arrives at Bonorong, our team will perform a conscious check on the animal as the first step to diagnosing injury or illness. 🩺
In a conscious check, our team is assessing how the animal moves while awake. This is a critical step that will help our team identify areas of concern based on the animal`s ability to move and behave in a way that we would consider normal and healthy for its species. It is also important to triage our cases appropriately. 🧑⚕️
In wildlife medicine, it is important for our team to examine the entire animal - not just the most obvious area of injury. For example, an animal who has sustained an obvious fracture from being hit by a car may also be experiencing head trauma from the impact. Or, perhaps the reason that they were hit by a car is a deficit in their vision. With no real patient history available for each new arrival, we must assess all possibilities, and much of this information comes from the conscious check (before being anaesthetised for a closer examination). 🩺
Our new conscious check room is purpose built to be adaptable, so it is able to suit the wide variety of wildlife species that our team sees each day. We have a variety of perching sizes available for different types of birds, and climbing poles to assess movement of arboreal mammals. The room is easy to keep clean, with minimal unnecessary obstacles, providing the perfect environment to provide a quick but thorough conscious check on a wildlife patient. ❤️🩹
Check out these images of some precious possums demonstrating how we use the space! 🐾
